Born and raised in Vancouver but currently calling Calgary home, Alex Bergen is a multidisciplinary artist, actor, singer, voice over actor, and performer. After studying as a Musical Theatre student in post secondary at Capilano University in Vancouver, Alex is thrilled to return home to Alberta and continue working on various creative endeavours! Alex has been lucky enough to perform across Canada, spanning over 50 stage productions since he began acting. Beginning his professional career at just 14, Alex has worked both on stage and screen. He also starred in many cartoons and has worked on video games for Nintendo as a voice-actor. He has also worked with clients like Netflix, Teletoon, Nickelodeon, YouTube, and Hulu. Most notably, he has given his voice to multiple characters on the hit television show BeyBlade Burst. On film, he is most notably scene in various commercials for clients such as The Calgary Stampede, GameSense, The AGLC, and as the face for a campaign with The Alberta Bottle Depot/Recycling.
In 2016, Alex was also awarded with a Calgary Youth of Distinction (YODA) Award for his work in Calgary Arts & Culture, nominated amongst over 150 applicants and selected as the recipient.
He has also been honoured to be involved in creative workshops, development, and presentations of original Canadian plays and musicals, such as, The Tooth Fairies and Failing Hands in with Storybook Theatre’s Workshop Series, a new one act play as King Solomon called 'Bathsheeba and the Books' which premiered at last year's Calgary One Act Festival, as well as various projects with playwright Caroline Russell-King. Alex also works as a playwright himself, completing a one act musical called ‘The Backups’ a new musical comedy about the ‘worst little league team in America’, in which he served as the playwright and collaborated with Jillian Bauer and Bruce Petherick. He is also currently working as the playwright for his original show ‘More Than Pieces’, which details Alex’s own experiences growing up Autistic in a Neurotypical world. It is currently in development. He is passionate about equality and visibility in the arts particularly for the neurodivergent and disabled communities.
Alex has also served as the assistant director in many productions, and spent seven years teaching Theatre School at Storybook Theatre to children ages 5-18, helping foster a love for performing and interpersonal skills that go from the theatre, to the classroom, and beyond!
In addition to his career as an actor, he works also as an Artistic Director with the emerging theatre company he founded called The Honest Collective, a semi-professional theatre company focused on emerging artists telling grounded works and sharing important stories. Since it was founded in 2019, he has produced two musicals with his company; Bare: A Pop Opera, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee where he starred as Matt Lloyd and Chip Tolentino, respectively. His company has employed over two dozen artists since its founding, and after a hiatus due to Covid-19, he is in the preliminary stages of planning another season of shows.
Alex is also very passionate about social change through the arts, and works for visibility and to champion for marginalized voices on stage. Growing up with mostly ‘invisible’ disabilities, Alex knows how important it is for representation and equal opportunities. He is constantly working to dismantle stereotypes as a proud neurodivergent actor. Alex strives to create spaces where everyone is comfortable to collaborate and come together, and to provide visibility and representation so folkx can see disabilities or neurodivergence celebrated on stages, screen, and beyond.
Alex loves telling stories and is immensely grateful for the opportunity to tell them for a living. He loves trying new things and meeting new people, exploring new works, and stretching himself creatively to stay on his growing edge.
Offstage, he likes to support local theatre, try not to fall while skiing, and find the best slice of cheese pizza. He also wishes to send his extended thanks to his incredible mom, Diane, and to his friends and family for their never ending support. He hopes his mom is ‘Proud of Her Boy’.
